Breathe in, Breathe Out..

We all live incredibly busy and stressful lives. Working hours are longer and our everyday life demands are increasing. It’s no wonder we are all stressed. Add on top of this growing house prices, child care costs and the idea of global warming. When do you ever have time to just sit, think and breath? I promise the point of this blog was not to point out the negatives in our lives, rather why it is important to take the time out of each day to just breathe. 23,040, the average number of breaths you will take in any one day. Out of those 23,040 how many of those do you actually focus on and I mean really focus on? Have you ever thought about taking 5 minutes a day to just sit and breathe? With stress related illness costing the workforce an estimated $300 billion a year in missed work it is in your best interest to pay attention.

What is breathing?

Breathing is an automatic response of the body, controlled by the brain. Feelings of anxiety or stress tend to increase the rate of breath and often leave us feeling out of control.  The thing about breathing is that it is within our control, with studies showing controlled breathing can reduce stress and related health conditions. Believe it or not but breathing correctly ensures our bodies receive the right amount of oxygen to replenish the brain with vital nutrients.

How should I be doing it?

Take 5 minutes each day to focus on your breathing. Using the SMG Kiqplan application select the mindful breathing function and follow the instructions to breathe in; hold; breathe out.

Why should I be doing it?

Breathing control is a practice undertaken in yoga, meditation and tai chi, all of which reduce stress. Multiple research studies have been conducted into the health benefits of mindful breathing. These benefits include:

  • Reduced stress and stress-related illness
  • Reduced lactic acid in muscle tissue
  • Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
  • Increased energy
  • Balanced oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the blood
  • Improved emotions and feelings of calmness.
